Underground Railroad
(inglés: "red clandestina).

Sistema secreto en los estados del norte de EE.UU. destinado a ayudar a los esclavos prófugos. Su nombre se derivó de la necesidad de guardar el secreto y de los términos ferroviarios que se usaban en su funcionamiento. Diversas rutas en 14 estados, llamadas líneas ofrecían lugares de refugio seguros (estaciones) para los dirigentes (conductores) y las personas a su cargo (bultos) en su huída al norte, a veces hasta Canadá. El sistema surgió en desafío de las leyes de los esclavos fugitivos y se mantuvo en actividad principalmente entre 1830 y 1860. Se estima que entre 40.000 y 100.000 esclavos usaron el sistema. Suministraban asistencia, en primer lugar, los negros libres, como Harriet Tubman, y filántropos, dirigentes eclesiásticos y abolicionistas. Su existencia ganó apoyo para la causa antiesclavista y convenció a los sureños de que el Norte jamás consentiría que la esclavitud continuara sin oposición.
